Larian Studios Unveil a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Largest RPG Yet

The speculation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, especially after host Geoff Keighley shared a puzzling image of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is creating a brand-new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer that included striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This choice of words implies that the team could be crafting a faster-paced experience as opposed to another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it pioneered the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—elements that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs that are viable if you're playing as a particular class or origin with a personal story.

The series is also notoriously permissive, enabling players to improvise both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be completed in a variety of manners, frequently in surprising fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you recalled something a non-human character said.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by teleporting a glob of lava in a inventive way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, fans can look forward to more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
