Toto Wolff Set to Sell Shareholding Valuing Mercedes Formula 1 Team at £4.6bn

Team Principal Wolff has led the Mercedes team to record-breaking achievements in F1

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to sell part of his ownership stake in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

The deal values the Mercedes team at £4.6 billion – an unprecedented figure for an F1 team – after McLaren were valued at £3.5bn in an adjustment to ownership structure in September.

Wolff, who owns one-third of the Mercedes F1 operation, plans to divest a shareholding approximately five percent.

Wolff, aged 53 will remain as team principal and chief executive officer if the sale goes through.

Shareholder Breakdown

The other shareholders in the team are Mercedes-Benz and chemicals giant Ineos Group, who both hold one-third of the enterprise.

A Mercedes spokesperson stated: "We will be making no comment on the matter. The management structure of Mercedes F1 will remain unchanged, and all three partners are dedicated to the ongoing success of the brand in F1."

Valuation Increase

This arrangement would represent a significant increase in value of the Mercedes team after Ineos Group acquired its share for £208 million in 2022.

This surge reflects the growth in valuations of Formula 1 outfits recently due to the increasing appeal of Formula 1 around the world.

This was also seen in the box-office performance of the Formula 1 film featuring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which was released in summer 2023 and earned over $630 million (£458m) at cinemas worldwide.

It is Pitt's most successful film and the most successful sports movie ever released.

Current Performance

The Mercedes team are runner-up in the constructors' championship, behind McLaren Racing, with three races remaining in the current championship.

Mercedes' primary racer George Russell has won two of the 21 grands prix this year and is in fourth place in the drivers' championship behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes secured a record eight straight team titles and seven driver championships, six for Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, between 2014 and 2021.
